I. Course Description:

In this course, students lay a foundation for other seminary courses by reading through the entire Bible, Old and New Testaments. The major events, persons, places, and chronologies of the Biblical materials are introduced, as well as the major themes of each individual book. Finally, the redemptive-historical thread of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation is expounded. (Students may exempt themselves from this course by passing a Bible knowledge examination administered through the Bible department.) Required.  Three hours.

II. Course Purpose

The mission of Erskine Theological Seminary is to “educate persons for ministry in the Christian Church.” A thorough knowledge of the Bible is essential and foundational to anyone’s educational preparation for ministry.

This course is offered in lieu of the Bible Content Examination. By the end of the course, the student should be able to pass the final exam. This exam will test the student’s basic understanding of the Bible.

IV. Course Requirements

A. Bible Reading

Each student will read the entire Bible during the summer, following the schedule below.

B. Exams (95% of the total grade)

1. There will be four one-hour exams covering material presented in class and assigned Bible reading. They will not  be cumulative. The best three of these will each count 20% of the total grade. (The lowest exam grade will be dropped.)

2. The final exam (35% of the total grade) will be cumulative and will cover all material for which the student is responsible. Failure to pass the final exam will result in an incomplete or failure for the course, regardless of performance on previous work.

C. Class Attendance (5% of the total grade)

1. 5% of the grade will be determined by class attendance.

2. Each student will be held responsible for all material presented in class, whether or not the student is present at a given class session.

D. Extra Credit

Students who wish to do so may answer a series of questions on Biblical geography (in four installments, given at each of the class meetings) using The Holy Land Satellite Atlas in book and CD-Rom form. Students who answer all four sets of questions will receive extra credit of one letter grade for the course. Students can also receive a lesser amount of extra credit by answering two or three sets of questions. Students may elect to do this extra credit work at any time prior to August 15, 2003.

VI. Incomplete Policy

The grade of ‘Incomplete’ can be assigned only when two conditions are met: 1) The student has completed the majority of the requirements for the course. 2) The student has been providentially hindered from completing the remaining requirements for the course. An ‘Incomplete’ granted for this course will automatically become an ‘F’ unless course requirements are fulfilled by November 1, 2003.
