Men's Basketball Schedule-----Men's Basketball Roster-----2000 Women's Basketball Team
Mark Peeler with wife Maggie (Erskine Women's Basketball Coach) and daughter Hope Mark
Peeler, Head
Coach Mark Peeler enters his third year piloting the men's program. His goal is clear- to bring a new attitude to the basketball program at Erskine and restore Flying Fleet basketball back to the small college glory it once experienced. Erskine has experienced steady improvement in Peeler's first two seasons of rebuilding the Fleet program. The inaugural campaign in '99-2000 was a tough one as Erskine struggled to win but four games. The Fleet improved to seven wins in 2000-2001, the most wins Erskine has experienced in four years. Peeler's rebuilding progress will continue in 2001-2002 as he has added another large corps of freshmen to the Fleet program. Erskine has now had 9 consecutive losing seasons, a drought Peeler and his squad hope to end in 2001-2002. Both as a high school coach at Kentucky Country Day in Louisville (1989-1991) and at St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, NC (1996-1999), Peeler inherited programs with six straight losing seasons, turning both around in two years. The 1998 Carolinas-Virginia Conference "Coach of the Year" believes that Erskine is on the turnaround path. "The most important thing we can do here is bring in young men who love the game and play with passion. They need to be quality students in the classroom as well so it does take a special type of person. We will not be successful with ordinary student/athletes but with extraordinary young people who will be willing to sacrifice to lead this program back to the success it enjoyed in the 60's and 70's. We have played almost all freshmen and sophomores the past two years and are just now starting to play some guys with experience. Combine that with a quality freshmen class in 2001 and I don't think it will be long before we stop talking about rebuilding and start winning." Mark Peeler, a native of Charlotte, NC, is a 1984 graduate of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN where he started at point guard for three years and led the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in assists all three seasons. Peeler also played on the Sewanee golf team for four years. He earned his masters degree from Winthrop University in 1994 while serving as an assistant for Dan Kenney's Eagles. Peeler served as Director of Athletics at St. Andrews from 1997-1999 while also serving as the schools' men's basketball coach. Peeler is married to Erskine Head Women's Basketball Coach Maggie Peeler. The couple reside in Due West. They have a daughter, Hope (2) and a son, Jenkins (born on September 16th, 2001). |
